MENDOCINO AND LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Adventist Health’s Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital and Ukiah Valley Medical Center and its affiliated physician clinics have reached a new multi-year agreement with Anthem Blue Cross to serve Anthem’s individual members who purchased their plans through Covered California.
With the new agreement, all affiliated physician clinics of Howard Memorial Hospital and Ukiah Valley Medical Center can accept Anthem Blue Cross Individual Pathway PPO sold via Covered California.
This includes physician offices: Adventist Heart Institute-Lakeport, Adventist Heart Institute-Ukiah, Fort Bragg Rural Health Center, Mendocino Family Care, Redwood Medical Clinic, Ukiah Valley Medical Specialties-Gastroenterology, Ukiah Valley Medical Specialties-Orthopedics, Ukiah Valley Rural Health Center-Lakeport and Ukiah Valley Rural Health Center-Ukiah network of clinics.
“We are pleased that members of Anthem Blue Cross Covered California now have complete network access to Adventist Health hospitals and its affiliated physician clinics,” said Gwen Matthews, president and chief executive officer of Ukiah Valley Medical Center. “We are confident we have made the right agreement that supports our collective efforts and helps community members to access the providers they need. We welcome members of Anthem Covered California at all of our clinics throughout Mendocino County and at our hospitals.”
Adventist Health also noted that Anthem Blue Cross Individual Pathway PPO members enrolled with a different medical group who wish to re-enroll with a Ukiah Valley Medical Center or Howard Memorial Hospital affiliated doctor should contact Anthem Blue Cross at the toll-free number on their current ID card.

UKIAH, Calif. – “Make ready” work has begun in preparation for the construction of the new Ukiah Valley Medical Center emergency department, intensive care unit and roof top helipad scheduled to open in early 2016.
The make ready work includes rerouting major utilities at the back of the campus and relocating and upgrading electrical and mechanical systems for the existing hospital.
Herrero Builders of San Francisco was awarded the general contract for the project and has been engaging local contractors wherever possible on the project.
Wipf Construction of Ukiah has been involved since January in locating existing services, planning the rerouting locations and new line relocations.
“Ernie’s (Wipf) counsel and advice has been invaluable both in the early planning and current stages of the project,” said Project Manager Jane Lund of Herrero.
Employee parking has also been impacted by the make ready work and will continue to be so throughout the construction.
Valley Paving out of Redwood Valley paved the new parking lot for medical center employees on the empty lot north of the hospital on Hospital Drive.
“Construction on the back side of the hospital makes it necessary for our employees to have safe, convenient parking without utilizing our patient and visitor parking areas,” says Becky Ryan, UVMC construction coordinator.
“It was and is of the utmost importance to us that local vendors and contractors have the opportunity to participate in our campus expansion,” states President and Chief Executive Officer Gwen Matthews, “Herrero is aware of this commitment and has held an open house on the project for local contractors. They are making every effort to engage local vendors who can meet the California State Healthcare Construction standards.”

With the new agreement, all affiliated physician clinics of St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake can accept Anthem Blue Cross Individual Pathway PPO sold via Covered California.
This includes physician offices: Adventist Heart Institute (two locations), St. Helena Medical Specialties Clinics (six clinics), Family Health Center (three clinics), Konocti Wellness Center (one
clinic).

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Gregg Harper (R-MS) this week introduced bipartisan legislation to expand telehealth services under Medicare.
The bill, titled the Medicare Telehealth Parity Act of 2014 puts telehealth services under Medicare on the path toward parity with in-person health care visits.
“Telehealth saves money and helps save lives,” said Thompson. “By expanding telehealth services, we can make sure the best care and the best treatments are available to all Americans, no matter where they live. I am proud to be introducing this bill with my friend and colleague Gregg Harper, and I will continue working with him to improve access to telehealth services.”
“Telehealth is one of the most promising aspects of the health care field,” said Harper. “Mississippians, Californians and people all over the country can benefit from an expansion of telehealth services. This is an issue that Congressman Mike Thompson and I have worked on together in the past, and it’s my privilege to help him introduce this bill.”
The Medicare Telehealth Parity Act expands telehealth in a series of three phases.
“We fully support this effort to improve health care access and affordability using telecommunications technology,” said Jonathan Linkous, chief executive officer of the American Telemedicine Association. “These cost-saving provisions are critical to improve telehealth coverage and extend care to millions of Americans.”
Phase one expands telehealth services under Medicare for video conferencing and technologies known as store-and-forward which allows clinical information such as videos, data, and x-rays to be stored and then sent to another site for evaluation.
This phase expands these services to all federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics and in counties within metropolitan statistical areas with populations less than 50,000.
The bill will expand telehealth coverage for certified diabetes educators, speech language therapists, audiologists, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
The use of remote-patient monitoring for diabetes, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will also be incorporated in this phase.
Phase two expands telehealth services under Medicare coverage for video conferencing and store-and-forward technologies in counties located in metropolitan statistical areas with populations of 50,000 to 100,000.
Video conferencing will also extend to a beneficiary’s home for home health services and agencies, durable medical equipment, home dialysis and hospice.
Speech language pathology, audiology, respiratory, occupational and physical therapies will also be covered services under this phase.
Phase three expands telehealth services under Medicare for video conferencing and store-and-forward technologies for counties located in metropolitan statistical areas with populations over 100,000.
The Medicare Telehealth Parity Act is endorsed by the American Telemedicine Association and the Telecommunications Industry Association.
The legislation has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Committee on Ways and Means.
Thompson represents California’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties.
