Macedo named interim undersheriff
LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – In the wake of Undersheriff Patrick Turturici's resignation late last month, a veteran sheriff's office staffer has been appointed to the job on an interim capacity.
Sheriff Frank Rivero appointed Capt. Chris Macedo interim undersheriff, according to a Monday statement released to the media by Macedo himself.
Macedo said that Turturici, who was appointed undersheriff by Rivero on Sept. 12, 2011, resigned his position with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on April 29 and accepted a job offer with the Yolo County Probation Department.
The reason for Undersheriff Turturici’s resignation was his desire to be closer to his wife and son, whom still reside in San Benito County, Macedo said.
Turturici previously had been undersheriff in San Benito County from 2005 to 2010, resigning in late 2010 after losing the sheriff's race there, as Lake County News has reported.
Macedo reported that he was appointed interim undersheriff by Rivero on April 30.
Macedo will remain in the position until further notice. He reported that he will be responsible for all duties and assignments and will sit on all boards, panels and committees that Undersheriff Turturici previously performed, according to his report.

Clearlake Police Department seeks community members to join Volunteers in Policing
CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Clearlake Police Department is seeking community members interested in joining its Volunteers in Policing – or VIPS – program.
VIPS members come from a variety of backgrounds, but their common goal is to represent the Clearlake community and help improve the quality of life for everyone here, the agency said.
Some of the volunteers are former peace officers and bring their law enforcement experience into the program, others came to the work as private citizens because they wanted to learn and participate in something new, according to the Clearlake Police Department.
Volunteers do not replace paid employees, they supplement them. The Clearlake Police Department said its volunteers perform tasks that would otherwise take police officers and dispatchers from their primary job of protecting the public and enforcing the law. They provide extra eyes and ears in the community, expanding police presence.
VIPS members currently do office work, assist in the property room, deliver subpoenas, issue handicapped parking citations, staff booths, direct traffic at community events and provide extra patrol in both the business and residential sections of the city at all hours of the day and night, police reported.
Future plans that the Clearlake Police Department has for its VIPS involve activities such as Neighborhood Watch, property ID and other crime prevention programs.
If you are interested in becoming a VIP, come by the Clearlake Police Department at 14050 Olympic Drive and pick up an application, or contact Nicki Burrell at 707-994-8251, Extension 308.

Clearlake Police officers save man who attempted suicide
CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Quick actions by Clearlake Police officers are believed to have made the difference between life and death for a man who attempted to commit suicide Monday afternoon.
Officers found the 39-year-old man – whose name was not released – attempting to hang himself in a shed and were able to cut him down before he died, according to a Monday afternoon report.
At approximately 12:48 p.m. Monday the officers responded to a welfare check on a reported suicidal male subject at an address located in the 14200 block of Alvita Avenue, police reported.
The agency said that a concerned family member called the Clearlake Police Department asking for a welfare check after receiving concerning text messages from the male subject.
Sgt. Rodd Joseph and Officer Andy Adams arrived at the residence in less than four minutes from the initial call, according to the police report.
When Joseph and Adams arrived, the report said they heard commotion in an unattached shed then heard the sounds consistent with a person choking. They found the front shed door locked and began trying to force entry, believing the man had possibly hung himself.
Joseph and Adams managed to locate a barricaded opening at the rear of the shed. The report said they forced their way into the shed and found the male subject unconscious and hanging from a rope around his neck.
Adams managed to cut the male down using his pocket knife, and the report said that he and Joseph provided first aid to the man and requested medical personnel to the scene.
Lake County Fire Protection District personnel arrived and transported the man to St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake for further medical and mental health evaluation. Police said the man is expected to survive, and the quick actions of the officers likely saved his life.
The Clearlake Police Department encourages calls for welfare checks when citizens believe they are warranted but would also like to encourage citizens to call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline if needed at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
