GE Committee presentation, algae, land purchase on Tuesday board agenda

LAKEPORT – The Lake County Board of Supervisors will receive a report from the Genetically Engineered Crops Advisory Committee, consider declaring a state of emergency on algae, look at purchasing several pieces of property in Lucerne and consider supporting a request to make Highway 53 a Veterans Memorial Highway.


The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the board chambers at the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St. TV Channel 8 will broadcast the meeting live.

At 1:30 p.m. the board will hear a presentation by the Genetically Engineered (GE) Crops Advisory Committee regarding growing of GE crops in Lake County.


The committee has been meeting since last year, in response to a proposal to ban GE crops countywide.


Based on the committee's recommendations the board will consider taking action on its proposals and whether the committee should continue. A report to the board was not available from the clerks' office on Friday.


At 11 a.m., Board Chair Denise Rushing will take to the board a discussion and consideration of county assistance to the Clear Lake Keys regarding its algae infestation. The board also will discuss declaring a state of emergency.


At 10:15 a.m., the board will hold a public hearing on the purchase of seven parcels on Country Club Drive and 12th Avenue in Lucerne for $150,000. The seller is the Lucerne Christian Conference Center.


At 10:10 a.m., the board also will consider giving support for a request to designate Highway 53 as a Veterans Memorial Highway. The Rotary Club of Clearlake is pursuing the project.

– Approve amendment no. three to agreement between the county of Lake and SWCA Environmental Consultants for the preparation of an Archaeological Resources Management Report, in an additional

amount of $3,925 (for a total cost of $34,881), and authorize the chair to sign.


– Adopt Resolution No. _____ approving Agreement 09-0311 with the State of California; Department of Food and Agriculture and authorizing execution and signature for pest exclusion activities for

fiscal year 2009-10.


– Adopt Resolution No. _____ authorizing the Grant Project, Lake County DUI Intensive Response Team.


– Approve out of state travel for Chief Probation Officer Meredith Helton to Huntsville, Texas, from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4 to attend the National Institute of Corrections’ Executive Orientation Program (all costs to be reimbursed by the National Institute of Corrections).
