Lake County Community Co-op presents farm tour at Seely

UPPER LAKE – Lake County Community Co-op (LCCC) members and the general public are invited to meet a local farmer and take a tour of the farm this Saturday, Sept. 12.

Colleen Rentsch, whose family owns Seely Orchard in Upper Lake, will show their farming operation of pears, walnuts, peaches and apples.

The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Seely’s Farm Stand, 80 E. Highway 20, Upper Lake (on the north side of Highway 20).

Visitors also be introduced to her great farm stand filled with a plethora of fruit and veggie delectables such as tree-ripened peaches, beautiful Lake County pears, heirloom tomatoes and several varieties of squash, melons, peppers and more.

Rentsch is a 20-year member of California Women For Agriculture. She participates in the “Farm to School” program with local schools and established a program with Kelseyville High School students to help with work on the farm, from the planting of seeds to the harvest of vegetables, as a way to introduce young people to farming and the food production process.

As part of the Kelseyville Farm to School program, Rentsch also makes presentations to elementary school students showing them where their food comes from and how it is grown, along with interesting food facts to make it fun. The students then sample yummy foods made with local produce with the help of the high school students who helped pick and prepare those foods.

Participants on this field trip will have ample time to ask questions and purchase fresh produce.

Interested in carpooling? Meet at the regular co-op location at 14773 Lakeshore Drive by 9 a.m. Sept. 12. For more information, contact Lori Patotzka at 707-994-1618.

Celebrating one and one half years in existence, the Lake County Community Co-op envisions cultivating an evolving community by nurturing values of social, economic and environmental responsibility.
