LAKEPORT – The 68th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 will be held in Lakeport on Monday, Dec. 7.
The community is invited to the special event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Pearl Harbor Survivors Chapter 23 North, Lake and Mendocino Counties' memorial mast in Library Park in Lakeport.
The surprise attack on Dec. 7, 1941, killed more than 2,300 members of the armed services, including nearly 1,200 people aboard the USS Arizona, according to Naval histories.
The guest speaker at this year's event will be District 1 Supervisor Jim Comstock, a Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War.
Guests of honor will be local residents who survived the attack: Walter Urmann, USS Blue; Clarence “Bud” Boner, USS Tennessee; Chuck Bower, US Sub Base, Pearl Harbor; Bill Slater, USS Pennsylvania; Henry Anderson, USS Tennessee; Floyd Eddy, mine sweeper USS Trever; and Jim Harris, destroyer tender USS Dobbin.
Also among the honored are two special women – called “sweethearts” by the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Alice Darrow and Vanya Leighton are widows of survivors; Dean Darrow, who died in 1991, served aboard the USS West Virginia and Fred Leighton, who died last year, was aboard the USS Ramsay.
The annual Pearl Harbor Survivors' luncheon will follow at TJ's Downtown Bar & Grill, 370 S. Main St., in Lakeport.
The public is invited to the event, which begins with a happy hour at 11:30 a.m. to be followed by lunch at noon. Menu selections include a prime rib sandwich or fish and chips. The cost is $16.50, which includes the entrée, dessert, soft drink, coffee or tea, tax and tip.
Reservations are required with your entrée selection by Monday, Nov. 30. To RSVP call Janeane Bogner, 707-998-3280.
