Clearlake Police Chief Allan McClain said officers arrested Khalil Abduljaami, 31.
At about 11:30 p.m. Friday Sgt. Brenda Crandall and Sgt. Tim Hobbs responded to the area of Flyers gas station in the 15000 block of Lakeshore Drive on the report of a suspicious person, McClain said.
McClain said while officers were in the area dispatch advised of an armed robbery which had just occurred at the nearby Best Western El Grande Inn.
While officers searched the area for the suspect a witness told the officers that a person matching the suspect’s description was in the 4000 block of Snook Avenue, according to McClain.
When officers arrived on Snook they identified and detained Abduljaami, a black male adult who matched the armed robbery suspect's description, McClain said.
Nearby, officers also found the handgun that allegedly was used in the robbery, along with clothing which had inside of it the money taken – approximately $295, he explained.
McClain said a witness observed Abduljaami allegedly switch clothing and discard the clothing in a trash bin near where he was contacted.
After Abduljaami was identified by two witnesses he was arrested and later transported to the Lake County Jail, McClain said.
Abduljaami, whose occupation was listed as “student,” was booked early Saturday morning on felony charges of first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm, with bail set at $25,000.
Booked under the name Khalil El-Amin, he remained in the Lake County Jail on Monday.
