Sheriff's office makes burglary arrests around the county

LAKE COUNTY – Last weekend the Lake County Sheriff's office arrested six subjects for unrelated burglaries that have occurred around the county recently.

Those arrested included Clearlake residents Kimberly Hansen, 30, and Steven Gibson, 41; 62-year-old Lakeport resident Lawrence Jelks; 44-year-old Steven Woosley of Lucerne; and Hidden Valley Lake residents David Peters and Deborah Marrone, both 46, according to Capt. James Bauman.

Last Friday, Jan. 22, at about 1:45 p.m., deputies responded to the Chalet Motel on Lakeshore Boulevard in Lakeport for a reported burglary in progress, Bauman said.

On arrival the deputies learned from one of the tenants that after arriving home and finding her room ransacked, she had seen two people moving her property from an adjacent motel room into a parked car, according to Bauman. Two suspects were still in the area upon the deputies’ arrival, were quickly detained and later identified as Hansen and Gibson.

Bauman said the victim reported that a total of $6,300 worth of electronics, medications and other property had been taken from her motel room some time after she left the room at about 11 a.m.

The stolen property was ultimately located and recovered from the parked car and what remained in a motel room being rented by 62-year-old Lawrence Jelks of Lakeport, who Bauman said also was at the scene and detained. All three detainees gave conflicting accounts as to how they came into possession of the stolen property and all three were ultimately arrested.

Hansen was booked on felony charges of burglary, grand theft, receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance with a $4,500 bail, Bauman said.

Gibson was booked on felony charges of grand theft, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possessing narcotics paraphernalia, and being under the influence of a controlled substance with a $35,000 bail. Bauman said Gibson also is charged with violating parole.

Jelks was also booked on a felony charge of receiving stolen property with a $10,000 bail and a parole violation, Bauman said.

At about 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, a sheriff’s deputy responded to Mary Lou’s Sandwiches on Highway 20 in Lucerne, where a man had reportedly forced his way into the business and stole a handful of sugar packets, said Bauman.

About five minutes prior to the deputy’s arrival, the man, who had apparently been previously banned from the business, came to the front door demanding entry. Bauman said that after a brief struggle between the man and the business owner over control of the front door, the man overpowered the owner, went into the business to take a handful of sugar packets and then fled the restaurant. The business owner was unharmed.

Based on a description and partial identification of the suspect, the investigating deputy was able to identify the suspect as Woosley, said Bauman. Within an hour of the incident, Woosley was located on Highway 20 and 14th Avenue and arrested.

He was subsequently booked at the Lake County Jail on felony charges of robbery and burglary with a $25,000 bail, Bauman said.

Also on Saturday at about 2 p.m. deputies served an arrest warrant on Peters at his home on Jade Court in Hidden Valley Lake, according to Bauman. Peters had been identified as the suspect in a Jan. 15 burglary of a home on Greenridge Drive in Hidden Valley Lake in which nearly $3,000 worth of tools and construction equipment were stolen.

Bauman said that nearly all of the property reported stolen was recovered when evidence found at the scene and assisting information from Hidden Valley Lake Security led deputies to Peters’ home the same day the burglary was reported. Peters however, could not be located until the following Saturday.

When deputies went to serve the arrest warrant on Peters at the Jade Court home, they were initially told by Marrone, another resident of the home, that Peters was not there, Bauman said. When deputies searched the home however, they found Peters hiding in a large box.

Peters was arrested for burglary warrant and resisting arrest, Bauman said, while Marrone also was arrested for attempting to conceal Peters and after a brief attempt to physically resist arrest, she was taken into custody without further incident.

He said Peters was booked at the Lake County Jail for first degree burglary and resisting arrest with bail set at $10,000 bail. Marrone was booked for felony accessory and misdemeanor resisting arrest with a $10,000 bail.
