Winegrape commission to host climate workshop Feb. 18

LAKEPORT – Weather related information that may benefit winegrape growers is the focus of a “climate workshop” to be presented by the Lake County Winegrape Commission on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 18, in the County of Lake Board of Supervisors Chambers, 255 N. Forbes St.

The workshop will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m.

Cost for attendance is $20 for commission members and $25 for all others. Reservations are required. To make a reservation or inquire about the workshop, call the Commission office at 707-995-3421.

Lake County microclimates, weather forecasts, and air quality requirements will be the topics covered by three workshop speakers, according to the Commission’s executive director, Shannon Gunier.

Microclimates and their effects on growing high quality winegrapes will be discussed by Rick Snyder, a biometeorologist with the University of California, Davis.

Weather forecasting tools provided to Lake County crop growers will be demonstrated and explained by Don Schukraft, chief executive officer and consulting meteorologist for Western Weather Group, the company that tracks and posts useful weather data on the Commission’s website.

The winegrape commission is a primary funding source for Western Weather Group’s weather stations and services. The County Ag Department’s Fruit Frost Trust and donations from American Ag Credit are sources of additional funding for the work done by Western Weather Group.

Workshop attendees will learn from County of Lake Air Pollution Control Officer Doug Gearhart about air quality requirements that impact the agriculture community.

Internet access via WiFi is available in the Board of Supervisors Chambers, according to Gunier. Workshop attendees are invited to bring their own laptops to follow along with the discussions, especially the Internet data to be presented by Schukraft.
