Police warn of prepaid credit card scam

LAKEPORT – Officials are warning of a money scam that's begun appearing locally.

On Thursday Lakeport Police Chief Kevin Burke reported that a white male suspect in his late 20s went into a Lakeport bank and presented a prepaid $400 credit card.

Burke said the suspect asked the teller for multiple transactions in the amount of $400, claiming that his credit card has a $400 per transaction limit.

However, what isn't apparent at first is that when multiple transactions are done back to back, the credit card verification thinks it is a series of duplicate transactions and will continue to approve the cash advances, Burke said.

That resulted in the bank giving the suspect $4,400 on a prepaid card worth only $400, according to Burke.

Beyond the basic physical description of the suspect, Burke said police no further information about the man so far.

Anyone with information should call the Lakeport Police Department at 707-263-5491.
