Sheriff's office introduces online crime reporting system

LAKE COUNTY – The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new online crime reporting option for the public.

The Web-based reporting system will allow the public to file certain incident reports, which will include but not be limited to minor thefts, vehicle burglaries, lost property, non-domestic violence restraining orders and vandalisms, over the Internet at their convenience, according to a Thursday report from Capt. James Bauman.

Bauman said the agency expects the Internet-based reporting service to be very popular among citizens who have come to expect the speed and convenience of police services through online reporting.

The service is available on the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Web site at http://lakesheriff.com/coplogic/start-report.html; or visit the sheriff's home page, www.lakesheriff.com, and click on the link at the lefthand side of the home page that says “File Crime Report Online.”

Bauman said the service will allow community members to file a report at a time that is best for them, without having to wait for a deputy to respond or call them back. The person submitting the information will be able to print a temporary copy of the report upon submitting their information.

The report will be reviewed by sheriff’s office supervisory personnel and once approved, the reporting citizen will receive an email with a copy of the approved report attached at no cost, Bauman said.

The report will then transfer into the Lake County Sheriff’s Office's records management system and receive the same investigation, followup and statistical analysis ability as if the report had been filed by a deputy sheriff, Bauman explained.

The web-based reporting option is expected to allow deputies more time to address community needs in the field, Bauman said, while also keeping pace with the public expectancy to complete services via the Internet.

Bauman said the online reporting service is not intended to replace actual responses by a deputy sheriff or any other current services, but is meant as another option from which the public can choose.

If a member of the public prefers to have a deputy sheriff respond, it will continue to be the policy of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to dispatch a deputy, he said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is using the Desk Officer Online Reporting System from the San Ramon, Calif.-based software company, Coplogic Inc., www.Coplogic.com.

Bauman told Lake County News that in adding the service the sheriff's office is following a culmination of best practices models currently used by many agencies – from Houston all the way to Lakeport Police – that employ the system currently.
