Photo cutline: Larry Wise, a volunteer for the Westside Community Park Committee, used a dozer donated by R.B. Peters to move and store asphalt grindings donated by Granite Construction last week. The approximately 20,000 tons of asphalt grindings obtained from the Highway 29 resurfacing project are earmarked to be used in development of road base for streets, access roads, parking lots and an extension of the ADA-accessible Forbes Creek Trail at the park, according to park committee chair Dennis Rollins. Westgate Petroleum donated 450 gallons of fuel for the tractor. Total value of the project was $350,000, accomplished through donations, for which the committee is extremely grateful, said Rollins, who contributed the photo.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Tickets for the inaugural “Grillin’ on the Green” fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, are still available.

Festivities including a barbecue cook-off, musical entertainment by the LC Diamonds, children’s activities, a car show, food sampling and wine tasting will take place between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Westside Community Park, 1401 Westside Park Road.

“We are going to have an excellent assortment of food – tri-tip, chicken, buffalo, and ribs – and you can’t beat the LC Diamonds for all-out fun music,” said Westside Park Committee Chair Dennis Rollins. “What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.”

Rollins said everyone is invited to join in helping decide the winner of the barbecue cook-off, and enjoying fun, games and entertainment. Side dishes to complement the barbecue will include corn salad, cole slaw, baked beans and cookies for dessert, Rollins said.

“Grillin’” competitors include a team from the Lake County Board of Supervisors and administration office, a law enforcement team calling itself “Top Cops,” and teams from the Lakeport Kiwanis, Lakeport Rotary, the Early Lake Lions of Lakeport and the Kelseyville Rotary. Casey Dye and the Irwin family will match their teams’ barbecue skills as well.

The public will help choose winners of the People’s Choice Awards.

Ticket prices are $25 per adult and $10 per child 12 years old or younger. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, the Kitchen Gallery, and Lake Event Design, all in Lakeport, and at the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce in the city of Clearlake.

Tickets also are available from members of the fundraising committee. They are Dennis Rollins, Cindy Ustrud, Alice Holmes, Wilda Shock, and Beth and Jeff Havrilla. For information about the event, call Ustrud or Rollins, 707-263-7091.

Children’s activities including a dunk tank and games are planned. Also, attendees will be welcome to take a self-guided walking tour of the planned park sites. A tour pamphlet identifying future activity locations will be available.

The car show will feature vehicles owned by members of the No Name Car Club and the National Antique Auto Club.

Wine tasting will be provided by members of the Lake County Winery Association.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the next phase of development of Westside Community Park, which will include soccer fields, a regulation baseball field, and a combination Little League baseball and softball field.

“We are fortunate to have several sponsors helping us with this event,” said Rollins.

The Priest Family Trust and the Keeling-Barnes Family Foundation, as major sponsors of the event, are each offering a $5,000 matching challenge to the community.

Event sponsors include Bicoastal Media, Delta Iota Tau, Granite Construction, RA Hamilton Co., Lake County News (LakeCoNews), Lake County Record-Bee, Lake Event Design, the Lakeport Lions, Mackey Tire, Mendo Lake Credit Union, Pehling & Pehling CPAs, Paul and Olga Racine, Margaret Silveira, Umpqua Bank of Lakeport, and Xi Rho PSI (Beta Sigma Phi).

Additionally, Ruzicka Associates, Westgate Petroleum, R.B. Peters and Jim Carpenter, CPA, have donated time and materials to the park development, Rollins said.

Westside Community Park is a city of Lakeport recreational facility that was established 12 years ago.

The nonprofit park committee is developing the park in conjunction with the city of Lakeport, volunteers, and numerous contributions by individuals and businesses dedicated to constructing a recreational facility for the youth and adults of Lake County.

The park currently is four acres consisting of two soccer fields, a parking lot, a picnic area overlooking the soccer fields, and an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant walking path.

Future plans for development of the park’s full 60 acres include baseball/softball fields, a BMX track, a skateboard facility, football fields, a children’s play structure, a dog park, walking paths and a horse arena.
