Lucerne FLOW to host inaugural harvest festival Oct. 9

LUCERNE, Calif. – Lucerne Friends of Locally Owned Water (FLOW) will host the inaugural Lucerne Harvest Festival this Saturday, Oct. 9.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lucerne Harbor Park, 6225 E. Highway 20.

Entry to the event is free.

“We wanted to do something for Lucerne,” said Lori Barrett, a Lucerne FLOW member involved with organizing the event.

The work of organizing the festival started last spring, Barrett said. Initially, the group had considered holding it in August, but decided to hold off until October, when the weather would be cooler.

“People are really excited about it,” she said. “I think we're going to have a pretty good turnout.”

Barrett said there will be activities for both children and adults.

At 10:30 a.m. there will be a children's parade, with children asked to either wear costumes or decorate their bicycles, she said. There also will be a piñata and other fun for young ones.

For adults, there will be a scavenger hunt around town spanning many local businesses. Barrett said it costs $1 to purchase an entry sheet. There will be prizes for those who get the most items in the fastest times, with awards for first, second and third places.

There also will be a horseshoe tournament, with a $10 entry fee, she said, and two raffles, a 50/50 and one with 20 prizes.

“We have gotten some really phenomenal prizes from businesses around the lake,” Barrett said.

There also will be live music by the local bluegrass band Blue Moon, she said. The group includes the husband and wife team of David and Sarah Ryan.

Vendor spaces, measuring 10 feet by 10 feet, are still available for $25 each. Barrett said vendors are coming from as far away as Napa and Ukiah.

Barrett said proceeds of the event will benefit Lucerne FLOW, which advocates for locally owned water, has a community garden on the lakeshore at Highway 20 and 13th Street – of which Barrett is the director – and does a bulky item assistance program to help people get large items to the curb for pick up by the waste collection company.

Lucerne FLOW holds regular meetings on the third Saturday of each month starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, located at 10th Avenue and Country Club.

For more information or to reserve a booth, call Barrett at 707-363-8082 or 707-274-2370. The cutoff for accepting booth reservations is Thursday evening.

In the event of a Saturday rain, the outdoor event will be canceled, Barrett said.
