The incident occurred on Jan. 6, according to acting Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen, who updated the Lakeport City Council about the incident at the council's Tuesday night meeting.
Sgt. Jason Ferguson issued a report late Tuesday that said the adult male followed the girl as she walked home to the 2200 block of Green Street from school.
Ferguson said the man is described as being in his 30s with a medium complexion, average height and weight, with short brown hair.
The subject was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, dark-colored jeans and Birkenstock-type
sandals, Ferguson said.
Rasmussen told the council Tuesday that Lakeport Police wasn't immediately notified of the incident.
He said the young girl waited until her mother returned home from work and the mother then called police about 40 minutes after the incident.
Lakeport Police and School Resource Officer Stephanie Green will work with school officials to provide students with awareness and safety training regarding stranger contacts, Ferguson said.
Ferguson said the department also is encouraging community members to remind their children to be aware of their surroundings when walking to and from school.
Children should be instructed to take precautionary measures such as walking with a friend whenever possible, staying in well-lit areas, and trying not to use shortcuts through trails and fields, he said.
Anyone with information about the male subject who followed the girl is asked to call the Lakeport Police Department at 707-263-5491.
