Clearlake City Council to discuss treasurer appointment, city administrator recruitment Thursday

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Clearlake City Council will discuss city treasurer applicants, review city administrator recruitment strategies and consider planning commission appointments when it meets this week.

The council will meet on Thursday, Feb. 10, at Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive.

At 5:30 p.m. the council will convene for a closed session to discuss two potential cases of litigation before the regular meeting takes place at 6 p.m.

Among the items on the agenda is a potential appointment of a city treasurer.

While the city has had difficulty over the last few years recruiting a treasurer candidate, the city has now received applications from six applicants, including Mark Bredt, Glen Gillham, Lacey Green-Deas, Jana Saccato, Jamee Schadlick and Evelyn Zientek.

Two other important appointments to be considered at the Thursday meeting are to fill seats on the Clearlake Planning Commission currently held by Albert Bernal and Fred Gaul. Bernal is seeking reappointment, but Gaul is not.

Applying for a seat on the commission along with Bernal are Bob Gordon, Alvaro Valencia and Estella Creel. The terms would run from this March to March 2015.

Regarding the selection of a permanent city administrator, interim City Administrator Steve Albright's report to the council suggests strategies for recruiting, screening and interviewing applicants. He also suggests the council decide on salary and benefits well ahead of actual contract negotiations with a candidate.

He said in his report that it should be the goal of this selection process to have a new city administrator hired and ready to begin work on or around June 1.

In an effort to show council unity to the incoming administrator, Albright suggests that “it would be advisable for the Council to select the individual publicly on a unanimous vote as a statement that the entire Council is supporting the new person as a fresh start for the city.”

Other items on the agenda include a presentation by Lake County NAACP Branch President Rick Mayo commemorating February as Black History Month, and a presentation by Terri Persons of the Lake County/City Area Planning Council on the Caltrans Community Based Transportation Planning Grant and consideration of a letter in support of the grant.

The council also will look at an amendment to an agreement for legal services between the city and Best Best and Krieger and get an update on the audit report for fiscal year 2009-10.
