SACRAMENTO – Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday issued an emergency proclamation for Mendocino and San Luis Obispo counties following the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan, which generated a water surge along the California coast, causing damage to ports, harbors and infrastructure.
This follows the emergency proclamation issued by the Governor for Del Norte, Humboldt, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties on March 11, 2011.
In Mendocino County, Fort Bragg's Noyo Harbor suffered major damage on March 11 from tsunami surges triggered by the Japanese quake, which this week the US Geological Survey upgraded to 9.0 in magnitude.
Officials have estimated damages at about $4 million in Mendocino County.
On Tuesday the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt a resolution declaring a local state of emergency.
Following the board's Tuesday action, North Coast Assemblyman Wes Chesbro (D-Arcata) requested the proclamation from the governor.
“This declaration will make California Emergency Management Agency resources available to Noyo Harbor to begin the recovery process,” Chesbro said.
