A report from Sgt. Tim Celli explains that a canine team would be a tremendous help to fight against crime.
Dogs can be used for many situations including, but not limited to building searches, tracking of criminals, locating lost children, locating evidence and property as well as narcotics detection, Celli reported.
The use of a strategically deployed canine team can save hundreds of man hours for police officers, according to Celli. A canine team can conduct a search quickly and effectively, resulting in increased safety to the citizens, the apprehension of dangerous suspects and increased officer safety.
However, Clearlake Police don't have funding available in the department's 2007-08 budget, said Celli.
In addition, during the recent round of budget workshops, the city cut four police officer positions to balance its budget, as Lake County News previously reported.
Celli reported that the approximate cost of a single canine, along with proper equipment, training and expenses is $20,000 dollars.
“We believe the canine program to be an important and necessary tool in furthering our service and protection of our community, therefore we are turning to the community for assistance,” said Celli.
The members of the Clearlake Police Department are asking for the community's help in funding this much-needed program.
The department is looking for donations to help get this program off the ground and any assistance would be greatly appreciated, Celli said.
In the near future, police also are planning other fundraiser events to help raise money for this program, according to Celli.
