LAKEPORT – What do vintage tractors, a pumpkin patch and a corn maze have in common? Both kids and adults love them and they were all available in Lake County on Saturday.
The Sutton Family Farm in Scotts Valley hosted the second annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off on Saturday and Lake County farmers of all ages brought the fruits of their labors in to be weighed, view vintage tractors and get lost in a maze.
Charlie Carstenson, 13, hopes that his 130.5-pound pumpkin takes the prize, although last year’s winner tipped the scale at 181 pounds. He also brought in two more weighing 109.5 and 98 pounds.
Asked how he grows pumpkins so large, Carstenson said they start early as volunteers, then he transplants them and waters the plants often.
Everyone also enjoyed viewing and learning about the antique farm equipment that Scotts Valley residents Evan Dills and his father, Greg, had on display.
The father and son team have worked together to restore tractors, gas engines and several farm implements for years and have more projects in the works.
At the end of the rows of pumpkins is the entrance to the Corn Maze, which entices young and old alike to wander the rows and try to find your way back out again.
The maze will be open through Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights, the maze is open until 10 p.m. when you can make your way through the corn field by flashlight.
But watch out for the monsters in the maze, warns farmer Stephanie Sutton, or you might find yourself “screaming like a little girl!”
The Sutton Family Farm is located at 2405 Scotts Valley Rd in Lakeport. Call 263-6277 for more information.
