UPDATE: Sheriff's office reports on jail death of murder suspect

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Sheriff's Office said the cause of death for a man arrested Friday for his girlfriend's death remains under investigation.

James Michael Carpy, 44, died Sunday night after being found unresponsive in his jail cell, according to Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Brooks.

Carpy was taken into custody on the night of Friday, May 4, for the murder of his girlfriend, who Brooks identified as 33-year-old Bethany Angel Vogel of Cobb.

Vogel's father – concerned because he hadn't heard from his daughter –  went to the Hogan Hill Lane home she shared with Carpy early Friday evening and found her body. Carpy was still in the home at the time, according to the original sheriff's report.

The cause of Vogel's death has not yet been released.

Carpy was booked into the jail early Saturday morning, according to jail records.

At approximately 7:10 p.m. Sunday a correctional officer at the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility was conducting a routine cell check and noticed that Carpy was lying on the floor of his cell, Brooks said.

After the correctional officer was unable to obtain a response from Carpy, medical staff was notified and immediately responded to the location, according to Brooks.

An assessment conducted by medical staff determined that Carpy was not breathing and did not have any vital signs. Brooks said medical and correctional staff started cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Central Dispatch notified the Lakeport Fire Department, which responded to the facility with rescue personnel, Brooks said.

He said rescue personnel continued CPR and transported Carpy to Sutter Lakeside Hospital where he was declared deceased shortly after his arrival.

Investigators at the scene were unable to determine any obvious cause of death. At this time it does not appear that Carpy was a victim of suicide or foul play, Brooks said.

The exact cause of Carpy’s death is still under investigation and pending an autopsy which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, according to Brooks.

He said the information concerning Carpy's death was not immediately provided to the press, pending the notification of family members.
