Deputy Sheriff’s Association holds annual ‘Steel Challenge’

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (DSA) held its third annual “Steel Challenge” on Saturday, June 16.

The Steel Challenge is a nonprofit shooting competition open to the public and law enforcement alike.

All proceeds from this event will be used by the Lake County DSA to support community members and nonprofit organizations in Lake County.

The Steel Challenge competition consisted of two events.

The first event was the handgun steel challenge, which was a four stage timed shoot in which competitors engaged three to five steel targets for an overall timed score.

The handgun steel challenge was separated into different competitive divisions.

Those event winners were as follows.

  • Men’s: Gary Hoertkorn.
  • Women’s: Doris Gorospe.
  • Junior’s: Trevor Brooks.
  • Senior’s: Lloyd Ho.
  • Law enforcement: Mike Pascoe.
  • Men’s revolver: Mike Pascoe.
  • Women’s revolver: Doris Gorospe.

Trevor Brooks ultimately took home the “Top Gun” award for the overall winner of the competition.

The second event was a three gun team event, where competitors engaged targets with a .22 Cal rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a handgun for an overall timed team score.

Phil Kaplar, Warren Fox and Jim Bolander Jr were the winning team in this competition.

The Lake County DSA would like to thank the many businesses and people that helped contribute donations and/or their time to making the third annual Steel Challenge a great success.

A special thank you goes out to the Lakeport Volunteer Firefighters Association for providing first aid services and an amazing lunch.

Thank you to all of the participants and the association looks forward to seeing everyone next year.
