LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Marin County Superior Court has rescheduled to next April the trial of a Lake County man accused of sexually abusing a teen.
The trial of 40-year-old Derik Navarro was moved to Marin County due to a change of venue granted last April, as Lake County News has reported.
Navarro is charged with 16 counts for allegedly being sexually involved with a teenager for a year, beginning when she was 14 years old in 2005.
He had been a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy at the time but was fired in April 2007 and arrested exactly a week later, as Lake County News has reported.
The trial had been set to start late last month, but Navarro’s attorney, Mitch Hauptman of Lakeport, said this week that the court bumped the trial out until April 8, 2013.
The California Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting Navarro due to a conflict of interest, specifically, Lake County District Attorney Don Anderson – while still in private practice – had represented Navarro in an administrative hearing regarding his sheriff’s office employment.
