CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Clearlake Police detectives are investigating a Saturday night incident in which a local man may have shot himself in the head accidentally.
The incident was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Old Highway 53 at the Ridgelake Apartments.
“Right now we’re investigating a potential self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” Sgt. Martin Snyder told Lake County News early Sunday morning.
Lake County Fire Protection District firefighters had attempted to call in an air ambulance to transport the victim. “All the flights were canceled because of weather conditions,” Snyder said.
Snyder said a ground ambulance transported the man to an out-of-county hospital for treatment.
As of 2:30 a.m., the man was still alive, Snyder said.
“Detectives were called out and the investigation is still ongoing,” said Snyder, adding that detectives were interviewing numerous potential witnesses.
Snyder did not release the man’s name, but friends identified him on Lake County News’ Facebook page as 21-year-old Jake Crosby, a Lower Lake High School graduate.
Facebook posts indicated Crosby may have been playing with a handgun and shot himself accidentally.
Snyder said additional details would be released later on Sunday.
