LAKEPORT – Calling it long overdue, the Lake County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, voted to provide $122,200 for a replacement of the Mt. Hannah community water tank.

"This has been on our list for five years and it's a shame it's gotten to this," said District 5 Supervisor Rob Brown after looking at photos of the dilapidated water tank presently serving the Mt. Hannah community.

Robert Stennet, who came to the podium during the proceedings in the Supervisors chambers, quipped, "I paused to look (at the tank) in 1982 and it was falling down then."

According to county Special Districts Administrator Mark Dellinger, the water tank is between 40 and 50 years old.

After being damaged by a 4.5 earthquake in the Anderson Springs-Cobb Valley area where Mt. Hannah is located, the tank could be filled to only half of its 100,000-gallon capacity.

Presently, the tank is tethered to a tree to prevent its falling down a hill. It has been twisted and shifted by seismic activity in the area.

The Department of Public Health Services has been pursuing emergency funding for the tank replacement, said Dellinger, and the additional $100,000 for its overall $220,000 will come from the state's rotating fund.

Dellinger said that a rate increase for water users in the district would be inadequate to address the issue.

District 3 Supervisor Denise Rushing asked Dellinger to compile a list of the top 50 priority projects for repair of water systems in the county.
