1. What issues do you believe are most central to this year's District 1 supervisorial election? {sidebar id=77}

Local jobs, housing market, planning, roads.

2. What traits make you the best person to represent District 1 on the Board of Supervisors?

I'm even-tempered, do my homework, I am approachable and I listen.

3. Are you for or against background checks and drug testing for In-Home Supportive Services workers who care for Lake County's elderly? Why or why not?

I'm for checks and testing. The program is there to help care for the disabled and elderly. It is our job to make sure they are not being taken advantage of.

4. What benefit or negative impact do you believe Indian gaming has had on the county's economy and county government's budget?

I know Twin Pines has been supportive of the schools and many charitable organizations. They also provide jobs. Personally I'm not a gambler.

5. How serious a threat is the quagga mussel? Did the county move fast enough to stop its spread to Clear Lake and other county bodies of water?

It is a serious threat. In Hidden Valley we are requiring the same inspections for boats to come into our lake. Only time will tell if the program will work.

6. Where do you stand on Propositions 98 and 99, and, most particularly, what is your position regarding the use of eminent domain to seize private property for the purpose of transferring ownership to a private developer to build shopping centers, industrial complexes and other non-public projects?

I am not supportive of eminent domain for transferring private property to private developers.

7. How would you describe your philosophy for growth in Lake County? How can the county's growth best be managed?

There are around 7,000 buildable lots for commercial or residential use. Before we start rezoning agriculture and open space we need to use up that inventory. I am thankful that many of the proposed projects did not happen. The housing problem would be much worse. Some of the ones that did get through are going through foreclosure. This makes the county look like not a good place to invest. This kind of thinking turns businesses away. By planning smart, controlling inventory and putting business in places that they will succeed, investment will follow.

8. As a member of the Board of Supervisors, how will you uphold your oath of office?

My first thought will be how will this affect District 1 and then how will this affect the county? I also believe being active in our communities give me the opportunity to see and hear what's going on in peoples' lives.

9. Agriculture is an important part of Lake County's economy. What is the biggest concern facing agriculture and what would you do about it? Are you for or against rezoning agricultural lands to other uses?

We need diversity in crops and how growth effects agriculture. Build within existing boundaries. I am against rezoning, especially when it is unnecessary.

10. Do you favor making Lake County a GE-free zone when it comes to agricultural crops? Why or why not?

I believe sometimes we throw everything in a box. Mixing animals with plants, personally I don't think that is a good idea. New bacterias could come from that and create other problems. At the same time cross-pollinations have created wonderful results. We have to be open to look at things on a case-by-case basis. We have to remember nature genetically engineered everything we eat today.

11. What would be your approach to promoting local businesses and attracting new businesses to the county?

We need to plan to create an environment for businesses to succeed. We need a small regional mall with anchor stores, theaters and restaurants in Clearlake. Maybe at the old airport site. This will help keep tax dollars here.

Business parks should be located where the workforce and transportation to the main highway arteries are. Agriculture and ag tourism need to be promoted. The one area we need to focus on is the service industry. It will continue to grow and create jobs.
