LAKEPORT, Calif. – A traffic stop by Lakeport Police officers on Tuesday led to the discovery of burglary tools, drugs and drug paraphernalia, and resulted in a Clearlake man's arrest.
Officers took Robert Lyle McGrew, 30, into custody Tuesday night, according to Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen.
At 11:50 p.m. two Lakeport Police officers were conducting foot patrol and checking for criminal activity in the 400 block of Martin Street when they saw a black Chevrolet pickup truck traveling south on South Brush Street, Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen said the officers stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver, who was identified as McGrew.
The officers determined that McGrew’s California Driver’s License was suspended and that he had numerous prior contacts for driving with a suspended license. Rasmussen said McGrew was placed into custody for the suspended license violation.
Prior to impounding the vehicle, the officers conducted an inventory search of it and located numerous items of contraband, Rasmussen said.
The contraband included that Rasmussen said the officers found included three glass methamphetamine smoking pipes and 0.3 grams of methamphetamine.
Rasmussen said there also was an extensive amount of burglary tools including shaved keys, lock picks and punches, flashlights, pliers, torches, a drill and a C02 BB gun that resembled a revolver.
McGrew was transported to the Lake County Correctional Facility where he was booked for misdemeanor charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license and for possession of burglary tools, Rasmussen said.
Jail records showed that McGrew's bail was set at $5,000. He later posted bail and was released.
The fact that McGrew was caught and arrested likely prevented other crimes in the area, Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen said McGrew has numerous prior arrests for drug violations including being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale and transportation of a controlled substance.
McGrew also has numerous other arrests for violations including resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, Rasmussen said.
Under California’s Proposition 47 of 2014, McGrew’s new possession of methamphetamine arrest is a misdemeanor rather than a felony, according to Rasmussen.
