LAKEPORT, Calif. – A water main break in Lakeport on Tuesday night caused debris flow across some city streets and also resulted in road closures.
A Lakeport Police officer discovered water leaking from the main break in the area of N. Forbes Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen.
He said city Public Works crews were on scene minutes later to try to locate the broken main and begin repairs.
Rasmussen said the broken water main was located under N. Forbes Street's northbound lane.
Public Works Superintendent Doug Grider, who along with Rasmussen was at the Lakeport City Council meeting on Tuesday night, left the meeting a short time after the main break was discovered to respond to the scene.
Later on Tuesday night Rasmussen said crews were trying to determine what had caused the break.
The incident resulted in both lanes of N. Forbes being closed immediately between Seventh and Eighth streets, a closure that later was widened to the area between Sixth and Ninth streets, Rasmussen said.
Additionally, Seventh Street between Main and Forbes streets was closed due to mud flow. Rasmussen said Ninth Street between Main and Forbes streets, however, remained open, despite having some mud on the roadway.
Late Tuesday, Rasmussen said crews were working to clean up the mud and were expecting to be on scene a few more hours before clearing for the night.
Seventh Street between Forbes and Main streets and the northbound lane of Forbes between Sixth and Eighth streets are expected to remain closed through late Wednesday afternoon, Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen said Public Works staff would be back on scene on Wednesday morning to continue repairs.
