Lt. Brad Rasmussen said Friday there have been six residential burglaries that were reported over the course of three days earlier this week.
The burglaries took place at two mobile home communities, Pier 1900 on S. Main and also at the nearby Lakeport Lagoons at 1800 S. Main, Rasmussen said.
“We're pretty sure they're all related,” he said.
The two communities are home to numerous seniors and retirees, he noted.
Rasmussen said the burglaries have occurred during nighttime hours, when the residents were not at home.
The burglars have primarily taken cash and jewelry, said Rasmussen.
He said the department has been devoting a lot of time to solving the burglaries.
“We've actually got several leads that we're looking at as far as different people who may be involved,” he said.
The city gets an occasional residential burglary here and there, as well as infrequent burglaries at storage shed facilities, but nothing like this latest series of crimes, said Rasmussen.
He said there also have been reports of burglaries along Lakeshore Boulevard in the county's jurisdiction. Sheriff's officials were not able to provide information about those break-ins by the end of the day on Friday.
Rasmussen said he can't say at this time if the burglaries on S. Main are related to those on Lakeshore. “It's certainly something we will be looking at.”
In the meantime, Rasmussen urges anyone who sees anything out of the ordinary to call police right away.
“Please call us immediately if you see any suspicious person or vehicles in the neighborhood,” he said.
He advised people to make sure their properties are secure and to have some type of lighting to help deter potential burglars.
Rasmussen also suggested that neighbors help each other by keeping out a protective eye.
Lakeport Police can be reached at 263-5491 or via 911 in an emergency.
