Sheriff's office investigates fight at rancheria

MIDDLETOWN – Sheriff's investigators are seeking more information on a fight that took place last week on the Middletown Rancheria.

The incident in question took place just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, Sheriff Rod Mitchell said Friday.

Mitchell said it occurred on lands owned by the Middletown Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, but was not in connection with the tribe's Twin Pine Casino.

“It's our duty to handle criminal investigations on tribal lands,” he said.

As many as six people – including those involved with the fight and those who witnessed it – have been part of the investigation, said Mitchell. The subjects are both tribal and non-tribal members.

“I don't see this as in any way a tribal disturbance,” he said.

Mitchell said some of the people involved in the fight were injured. One person reported allegedly being struck with a pipe or a club, but at the time of the incident refused to provide more information to deputies.

Other injuries reported were scratches to one person's face and lacerations on that of another, Mitchell said.

The specifics of just what happened are still murky, as Mitchell said the initial investigation didn't yield enough to either make arrests or file charges. There also was a lack of cooperation on the part of some of those involved.

“Some of the parties were already gone prior to our arrival,” he added.

Investigators still have few leads at this point. “However, we are still conducting an active investigation based on new information that's been provided to us,” he said.

On Friday afternoon, Mitchell said his office received some information from involved people “who are concerned about the community.”

Mitchell said he's hopeful that they'll be able to do more interviews and get additional cooperation from tribal members who were present in order to be able to seek prosecution.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Lake County Sheriff's Office at 262-4200.
