Police arrest Kelseyville man for elder abuse

CLEARLAKE – A Kelseyville man was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly assaulted and threatened an elderly man.

Lt. Mike Hermann of the Clearlake Police Department reported that 39-year-old David Moreno was arrested on the charges late Tuesday.

Hermann explained that Moreno showed up at the 35th Avenue residence of a 71-year-old man just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday. There, Moreno allegedly began banging on the door and threatening the victim, who he believed had spoken badly about him.

When the victim refused to let Moreno in, Moreno allegedly tried to break in the door, said Hermann.

That attempt failed, and so Moreno allegedly walked around the residence and broke out a window which he then climbed through, Hermann said.

Once inside, Moreno allegedly continued yelling at the victim while threatening to “kill” him. Hermann said Moreno then allegedly chased the victim down and began beating him about his face and body.

During the incident, Moreno is alleged to have bitten the victim's right hand, causing a moderate-sized laceration, according to Hermann. Moreno then allegedly fled the residence when two of the victim's caregivers came to his assistance.

When Clearlake Police officers arrived on the scene, they found Moreno in the area of 31st Avenue and a short foot pursuit ensued. Hermann said Moreno was eventually captured and taken into custody, at which time he was also found to be in possession of one of the caregiver's purses.

Moreno was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail.

Moreno, whose booking sheet lists his occupation as a landscaper, was arrested for numerous felonies  including elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon (hitting and biting the victim), robbery, first-degree burglary, resisting arrest, criminal threats, receiving stolen property, petty theft and a parole violation, plus misdemeanor charges of vandalism and resisting arrest, according to jail records.

He remained in jail on Friday, with bail set at $50,000.

Hermann said the victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The investigation is continuing and the report has been forwarded to the Lake County District Attorney's Office for review, Hermann said.
