The signature threshold for the recall – 20 percent of all registered voters in Lake County – proved to be just too high of a hurdle to overcome.

Although it is disappointing that the recall fell short of qualification, we respect the democratic process and will honor the results.

I am very proud of the fact that over 7,000 Lake County residents signed petitions to remove the incumbent sheriff.

This strong showing of voter opposition clearly demonstrates that Mr. Rivero’s days as sheriff are numbered and that change will be coming to the Office of Sheriff-Coroner in the June 2014 regular election.

Again and again, Sheriff Rivero has embarrassed Lake County law enforcement professionals and residents alike with his mismanagement and dishonest behavior.

I will continue working hard over the next nine months toward the goal of restoring public confidence in the Office of the Lake County Sheriff.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the hundreds of volunteers who helped collect signatures, as well as the thousands of Lake County residents who signed recall petitions. Your involvement and courage will be rewarded with the election of a new sheriff next year.

Brian Martin is a candidate in the 2014 race for sheriff of Lake County, Calif. He lives in Lakeport.
