Board approves initial step in creating CLO park

Among the most highly ranked items was a community park, said county Chief Administrative Officer Kelly Cox.

On Tuesday the county moved toward fulfilling that wish when the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved purchasing 11 parcels to create a park area in the center of town.

The land in question, just over an acre located next to the Red & White Grocery, belongs to Gary Nylander, said Cox. The asking price for the property is $375,000.

Cox said he's excited about the project, which has been in the works for the last few years.

“I think it's going to be a tremendous asset for the community,” said Cox. “We're going to make it really attractive.”

The park property is located next to a redevelopment project of the Oak's Plaza area, said Cox.

Cox said the plan is to keep the park as open space. “It'll be a nice park, with benches, maybe some tables, trees, shrubs and landscaping.”

It's not big enough for a ball field, said Cox, but will offer the community a space for events and gathering in the town's center.

Tuesday's vote approved the option agreement, said Cox, which is the first step in the county's land purchase process.

The final acquisition is tentatively scheduled to return to the board Feb. 12, Cox said, at which time the county would close escrow with Nylander and start working on improvements.

“It's in such a central, visible location,” said Cox. “It's a high priority to me. I'm going to try to get our crews working on it right away.”
