LAKEPORT, Calif. – Burning trash is believed to have led to a small wildland fire in the north Lakeport area on Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 575 Pine Ridge Road near the U Wanna Camp campground shortly after 3 p.m. Monday.
Lakeport Fire Chief Ken Wells said his agency, along with Kelseyville Fire, Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, responded to the incident.
Wells said the cause was linked to an elderly woman burning trash, with the fire spreading into the wildland.
Lakeport Fire sent two engines and a water tender; Kelseyville Fire sent one engine; Cal Fire responded with a handcrew, a helicopter and two engines; and the U.S. Forest Service sent two engines, Wells said.
The Cal Fire helicopter pilot reported over the radio that the fire was burning in grass and pine trees, and had a slow rate of spread.
In all, about a half an acre burned in an area of knobcone pines, with no structures threatened, according to Wells.
The fire was reported contained at approximately 4:18 p.m. Wells and other Lakeport and Kelseyville personnel were clearing the scene shortly before 5 p.m.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Wells told Lake County News that Cal Fire had taken over command of the fire and remained engaged in mop up. He expected they would still be on scene mopping up until after 6 p.m.
