LAKEPORT, Calif. – A Lakeport man charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at another man during a fight last week appeared in court on Tuesday.
Raymond Richard Casillas, 22, was arraigned before Judge Richard Martin on Tuesday afternoon in Lake County Superior Court’s Department 2.
Casillas is facing several felony counts, among them attempted murder, for attempting to shoot Edward Mahan of Kelseyville with a .22 caliber rifle during the June 22 fight, which occurred in the area of Central Park Avenue and Shady Oak Street in Lakeport.
Attached to the attempted murder count are special allegations of using a firearm and personally and intentionally discharging a firearm.
Other counts include assault with a deadly weapon, with a special allegation of use of a firearm; unlawfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner that could have caused injury; being a felon in possession of a firearm; and escaping from custody.
Following the fight Casillas was detained but later escaped, with police alleging that 21-year-old Dana Rochelle Hueners, also of Lakeport, helped him get out of the patrol car. She was arrested later that night.
Casillas was taken into custody by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday after they received a tip that led them to a Windsor residence, as Lake County News has reported.
Hueners also was arraigned on Tuesday, with the District Attorney’s Office filing a joint case against her and Casillas.
As Hueners and Casillas were brought into the courtroom by the correctional officers, they smiled and waved at family members. Sitting in the jury box waiting for the arraignment to start, both were talking to fellow inmates and appeared cheerful and relaxed.
Casillas was convicted in June 2006 of felony driving under the influence causing injury, according to the information Martin reviewed in court.
The District Attorney’s Office is therefore charging Casillas with special enhancements for having a prior prison term within 10 years of the June 22 incident, which would bring five years on conviction, and not being free from prison for five years before committing the crime, which could get him a year in prison.
Martin told Casillas that, if convicted, he could only be sentenced on one of those counts.
Hueners is facing a felony count of assisting a prisoner in escaping.
Casillas told the court he would hire his own attorney. Hueners, who said she worked at a restaurant and also received food stamps, qualified for counsel through the public defender, and Judge Martin appointed Lakeport attorney Mitchell Hauptman to represent her.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Hinchcliff asked for $450,000 in bail for Casillas – $200,000 for the attempted murder charge and $250,000 for the special allegation that he personally used and discharged a firearm.
Hinchcliff said Casillas is alleged to have shot at Mahan as Mahan was running away.
Hinchcliff asked for the regular bail schedule amount – $15,000 – for the assisting in escape charge against Hueners. He told the court that she had a prior juvenile record for a 2009 drunk in public conviction.
Martin agreed with Hinchcliff’s suggestions on the bail amounts and set them accordingly.
He ordered Casillas and Hueners to return to court on Monday, July 2, at 8:15 a.m. before Judge Andrew Blum in Department 3.
The 34-year-old Mahan, the alleged victim in the attempted shooting, was arrested on June 22 following the fight, according to Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen.
During the investigation into the fight, Rasmussen said police discovered that Mahan was wanted on an out-of-county warrant.
He was booked that night, with bail set at $7,500. Jail records indicated he later was released.
