LAKEPORT, Calif. – Two Finley men were flown to regional trauma centers as the result of the Sunday night crash near Highland Springs that officials said was the result of drunk driving.
Nelson Hernandez, 24, and Brian Vasquez, whose age was not available, were injured in the crash on Highland Springs Road north of Rodello Road just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A third Finley resident, Ivan Vasquez, whose age also was not reported, was not injured in the wreck, the CHP said.
The CHP said Hernandez was driving his 2003 Mitsubishi Galant southbound on Highland Springs Road at a high rate of speed when, due to his alleged level of alcohol intoxication, he entered a right turn in the roadway and allowed his vehicle to veer to the left.
Hernandez crossed over the double yellow lines and the car left the roadway, rolling over multiple times and coming to rest on its top in a vineyard, according to the CHP and reports from the scene.
Brian Vasquez suffered major injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Chico's Enloe Hospital, the CHP said.
Hernandez, who the CHP said suffered moderate injuries, was flown to UC Davis Medical Center.
The CHP reported that Hernandez was placed under arrest following the crash but released to the care of the hospital.
