KPFZ turns corner with grant, events

KPFZ celebrated receiving this federal grant in November at the Saw Shop Gallery Bistro in Kelseyville. A successful evening, more than 75 community radio supporters attended, raising more money and generating more excitement over this new community radio station. Everyone also seemed to appreciate the appetizer buffet, champagne, meeting fellow supporters and especially the short speeches.

In addition, on Dec. 16, at another benefit for KPFZ (and the PEG TV channel), a packed house at the Clearlake City Hall showed up to hear from media watchdog group, Project Censored. Project Censored is a long-established Sonoma State nonprofit that publishes the top 25 most censored news stories of the year ignored by the mainstream press. The audience seemed particularly enthusiastic about the importance of local, independent media and its possibilities. Ninety percent of the donations and a silent auction went toward KPFZ's financial needs.

Again, thanks to everyone who came to these events, helped with the grant, have become founding members and who have supported KPFZ in so many other ways. Without your help, KPFZ would not have turned this significant corner. It is no longer a matter of "if" there will be countywide community radio anymore; it is a matter of "when." In the next issue of ArtNotes, we will discuss how soon this "when" could take place.
