Storms knock down trees, power lines

The California Highway Patrol's activity logs for the early hours of Wednesday showed repeated calls for PG&E's assistance in removing power lines and trees from the roadways. Lake County Sheriff's deputies, CHP and fire departments have also been called to scenes around Lake County to assist in hazard removal and traffic control.

Cable and Internet services were down for a brief time Wednesday morning, but were restored by about 9 a.m.

In addition, in the past few days there have been minor mud slides reported near last winter's trouble spots on the Hopland Grade and on Highway 20 near Clearlake Oaks, and incidents of rocks in the roadway were reported on Tuesday in the Coyote Grade and Butts Canyon Road areas in the south county.

The county's Public Works Department reports several road closures, including Soda Bay Road through the Black Forest area, and Northslope Drive in Riviera West for downed trees and power lines. Merritt Road is closed due to water covering the roadway.

The National Weather Service reports showers are expected to taper off by this afternoon, but that Lake County can expect northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with local gusts to 40 mph. North winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph are expected into the evening.

The winds, coupled with saturated grounds, could lead to more downed trees, a common winter hazard.
