David Sheldon Shalett, 34, of Kelseyville, was identified Thursday as the victim in the case, according to Sgt. Corey Paulich.
Paulich said detectives from the Lake County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation into Shalett’s killing, which occurred at a residence in the 5000 block of State Street.
Sheriff’s deputies and Kelseyville Fire personnel responded to the home just before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday on the report of a male gunshot wound victim, finding Shalett deceased when they arrived, according to radio reports from the scene.
Paulich said Shalett was killed during an apparent home invasion robbery.
One of the assailants shot Shalett and stole a small amount of marijuana, Paulich said.
Shalett’s two young children, ages 8 and 10, were present and witnessed their father being shot, according to Paulich’s report.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to confirm the cause of Shalett’s death, which is believed to be from a gunshot wound, Paulich said.
Meanwhile, Paulich said the effort to find the person who fatally shot Shalett is continuing.
The sheriff’s office has released a description of the shooter, who is described as a male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
The last known sighting of him was as he fled from the scene on foot, running south from the residence.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who has surveillance video covering the Gaddy Lane or State Street areas, or who has any other general information about the homicide or the person responsible, to contact Sgt. John Gregore at 707-262-4238 or
