Middletown Art Center to host ‘Loving Vincent’ Jan. 19

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Join the Middletown Art Center on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. for a MAC Film Club screening of the just-released “Loving Vincent.”

“Loving Vincent.” is a remarkable film, made mainly in Poland, but in English.

It’s about a young man who begrudgingly goes on a mission to deliver a recently discovered letter from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother. Van Gogh has died, apparently by his own hand, many months before.

The young man’s father, a postman, entrusts his reluctant son with the mission. It turns into something like a murder mystery.

The story is quite compelling, but what’s remarkable was the painstaking method of its art direction: 100 artists hand-painted each frame, over a period of years, in Van Gogh’s style.

The actors’ performances are rotoscoped, which gives them the feeling of an animation style, and inserted into the hand-painted backgrounds.

The scenes and casting were based on Vincent’s paintings and portraits, and they come alive in a stunning way.

This is a unique experience that lends itself brilliantly for exhibition in the MAC home of art.

The screening is by donation to support local artists.

MAC is at Highway 175 and 29; enter on the left side of the building, as the gallery will be closed.
