MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Join artist John Jennings and create linocuts at Middletown Art Center on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Adults and children age 12 and up of all levels of art-making experience, from newbies to professionals, are invited to attend a day of drawing and printmaking for just $10.
Life drawing with model will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and printmaking will happen from 1 to 5 p.m. Those planning to attend printmaking only may do so for $5.
Although charcoal and newsprint will be available, MAC recommends that folks bring their own drawing supplies if they have them.
Printmaking supplies will be provided with alternative higher quality linoleum available for purchase.
Bring a lunch or plan to purchase something in town.
Please register in advance for all Restore classes at www.middletownartcenter.org/restore, email
“In my journeys through the various modes of printmaking, I’ve found none quite as dynamic as relief printing, whether linocuts or working on wood,” explained Jennings. “We will explore the range of possibilities from vigorous to delicate lines and the play of light and shadow in defining our two dimensional space. In our class I hope to introduce the participant to the magic of relief printing: from the drawing stage to the transfer of the drawing to the linoleum block, to the carving of the block to printing of the image. The thrill of pulling the rice paper off the block and seeing your work in ink on the page is like no other.”
Restore classes provide opportunity to learn or refine skills in a variety of materials and techniques, including dry point, block printing, felt, clay, metalworking, plaster, concrete, and more. Late winter and spring classes will focus on collaborative and personal projects.
The Restore project provides low-cost classes most weekends through May 2019. Learn more about Restore scheduling at www.middletownartcenter.org/events.
While participants can join for just one class, MAC encourages participation in a series of classes to collaborate in project design and implementation for a new Art Walk on Rabbit Hill, and/or to develop a body of personal work personal for consideration for exhibition at MAC, at the EcoArts Sculpture Walk, and at MAC exhibits at locations throughout the county.
Restore printmaking participants will have opportunity to contribute to MAC’s second chapbook of writings and images, and select exhibitions.
The first chapbook, “Resilience – a community reframes disaster through art,” is available for purchase at MAC or on the MAC Web site.
On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Restore project features Writers Workshop with Clive Matson. Sunday Dec 16 Emily Scheibal will lead a class in sculpting with plaster.
The Restore project was made possible thanks to support from the California Arts Council, a state agency, with additional support from local organizations, businesses, and individuals. Visit www.ca.arts.gov to learn more about the California Arts Council’s important work in communities and schools throughout California.
