SACRAMENTO — The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will hear updates on local actions by Groundwater Sustainability Agencies to manage groundwater basins as well as an updated study on drought impacts related to land fallowing and economic loss.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, 1220 N St. – Main Auditorium, Sacramento.

The meeting is also available via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83520053322.

Webinar ID: 835 2005 3322; passcode: Board2022!. The phone access passcode is 0567217721.

“In California, we have the potential to lose up to 10% of our water supply by 2040 as a result of a hotter and drier climate,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “This year has been the State’s driest on record. We must adapt and manage our water supplies, including groundwater, to foster a more drought resilient agricultural economy. ”

Invited speakers include: Josue Medellin-Azuara and Joshua Viers, University of California Merced; Paul Gosselin, California Department of Water Resources; and other invited speakers.

“As we look to the potential of yet another drought year, we will see more land out of production and continuing pressures on rural communities in the Central Valley,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “We need continued collaboration at the state and local level to further statewide conveyance, enhance groundwater recharge and to invest in infrastructure.”

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.

NORTH COAST, Cailf. — On Tuesday, Arcata Economic Development Corp., or AEDC, a community development financial institution, economic development corporation and small business lending center, announced it has been awarded a $5 million grant from the California Community Economic Resilience Fund to support a planning process developing sustainable industries that will create high-quality, accessible jobs for all.

As the grant’s fiscal agent, AEDC will manage the funds on behalf of the Redwood Coast Region representing Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Lake counties, and partner with the California Center for Rural Policy at CalPoly Humboldt who will serve as a regional convener to facilitate a diverse leadership collaborative, community engagement and research to inform development of the regional plan.

“AEDC has worked to provide financing for small businesses within these four counties for decades. These funds will allow us to collaborate and think even bigger, addressing infrastructure and community development projects and programs that support the entire region. We are thrilled to be part of it,” said AEDC Executive Director Ross Welch.

The Redwood Region RISE — Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable Economy — planning effort will run from November through September 2024 and produce a plan recommending project investments across the region that will grow industries creating high quality jobs and support goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

“CCRP is excited to leverage its long history of participatory research and engagement in the region in the service of CERF goals. Our mission is to set a table where people of all backgrounds, workers, business leaders, professionals and policymakers can collaborate towards a vision of a thriving, carbon neutral, and equitable future” said Dawn Arledge, CCRP executive director.

CCRP is a research and evaluation center committed to informing policy, building community, and promoting the health and well-being of people living in rural California.

CCRP will work closely with North Coast Opportunities Inc., or NCO, who will take a lead on community outreach activities.

Established as a nonprofit in 1968, NCO’s mission is to strengthen communities through responsive advocacy, engagement, and services. It is the community action agency for Lake and Mendocino counties

Thirteen regions across the state were invited to apply for funding to produce regional roadmaps prioritizing equitable economic recovery and transition to carbon neutrality.

AEDC, CCRP and NCO with staff support from the Humboldt Area Foundation, facilitated discussions this past June and July with a group of approximately 75 stakeholder organizations to obtain input on existing plans and priorities which contributed to the successful proposal, with 47 organizations across the region submitting letters of support and committing to play an initial leadership role in the project.

The West Center, an early organizer and supporter of the application process, has posted the application, initial leadership collaborative and other information about Redwood Region RISE on its website.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. — The Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting for the Meadowood Nursing Center under the new owner, Aaron Edmonds.

Edmonds owns one other nursing center in Vacaville. He loves the small-town atmosphere of Lake County and the caring staff here at Meadowood.

The new administrator is Jean Parriott who has been employed for over 19 years and started her career through the Certified Nurse Assistant Program at Meadowood.

Her dedication to her patients and staff earned a department head position which led to her current position as administrator.

Meadowood has been home to the CNA Program for years. This partnership through the Lake County Office of Education and the Ukiah Nursing School, has educated many future nurses.

The Student Volunteer Program, before the Covid outbreak, provided opportunities for local high schools to receive a valuable education in the nursing field.

One such student is Nicole Giordanego who earned many volunteer hours and is now their new admission coordinator.

Meadowood is a 99-bed facility, located in the city of Clearlake at 3805 Dexter Lane. They opened their doors on Valentine Day in 1992.

This center offers a family friendly atmosphere, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, as well as providing transportation to their patients when needed. You can reach their Admission Coordinator Nicole at 707-994-7738, Extension 123.
