MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – Mendocino National Forest Supervisor Ann Carlson has closely reviewed the Supplement to the Environmental Assessment for the Smokey fuels project and has determined that the original decision to adopt the proposed action is sound and will stay in place.
The Smokey Project consists of fuels and vegetation treatments on 6,337 acres of National Forest System lands in Glenn County and a small portion of Tehama County west of Willows on the Grindstone Ranger District.
Treatments planned in this project include commercial thinning on 933 acres, reducing fuels using combinations of prescribed fire and mechanical treatments on 3,326 acres, precommercial thinning on 400 acres and improving wildlife habitat on 1,678 acres.
Carlson added, “The finding of no significant impact (FONSI) documented in the 2012 Decision Notice remains valid. Therefore, the Forest Service will not prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the Smokey Project.”
The Forest Service has completed the legal requirements for this project and will request that project implementation be allowed to proceed.
Project details can be found on the forest Web site at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=52538.
