CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – Catfish Derby Committee Chair Dennis Locke announced that the forms to enter the 35th annual Catfish Derby are available online at www.clearlakeoaks.org/derby.
The Catfish Derby is held in Clearlake Oaks on May 18, 19 and 20.
“We’re expecting a record crowd this year,” said Locke. “On average we get about 1,000 entries a year. I’m happy to report entries are coming in a little earlier than we usually see so we’re off to a good start.”
Hailed as the biggest Catfish Derby west of the Mississippi and arguably the best attended event of its kind in North America, the derby attracts anglers, their families and friends as well as hundreds more spectators who enjoy the family-oriented sport.
“One of the most gratifying aspects of the derby is the economic boost it gives our community,” said Locke. “The hotels, resorts and campgrounds fill up, sales at our bait and tackle shops increase and the restaurants and casinos also get a boost along with our wine tasting and other venues. Early reservations are recommended.”
Unchanged from last year’s derby, entry fees are $40 for pre-sale entries, $50 after deadline and kids pay $10 and receive a free derby t-shirt. The traditional derby t-shirts and hats will also be sold.
More than $10,000 in prize money is awarded to the winners.
First place prize is $4,000, second place is $1,000 and third is $800. A total of 20 anglers will place in the adult category with prizes scaling down to $40.
There are also two kid categories, up to 10 years and 11 to 15 years of age. The kid prizes start at $100 and scale down to $10.
In addition, another $2,500 is given out in raffle prizes.
Locke said the derby is a broad-based community effort, three days of gathering with friends from around the lake as well as return families from near and far.
“It’s a wholesome family activity. We especially love seeing the younger generation get hooked on fishing.”
