LAKEPORT, Calif. – At a recent potluck picnic at Debra Heckert's Grey Heron Farm in Lakeport, the Trowel & Trellis Garden Club, a member of California Garden Clubs Inc., celebrated another successful year of gardening and supporting civic and student activities in Lake County.

Barbara Swanson performed the installation of officers for the 2018-19 term.

Officers are Kathleen Steinberg, president; Debra Heckert, co-vice president; Dana Benjamin, co-vice president; secretary, Sue Stiles; treasurer, Margaret Sanders; and parliamentarian, Cherie Lowe.

Steinberg said her theme is “Our Birds of Lake County.”

“We will continue to support our mission statement of gardening, civic beautification, conservation of our natural resources and encourage members to participate in local, district and state projects,” Steinberg said.

The planning meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Umpqua Bank.

Leanna Harvey introduced Maranda Kalousek, Lower Lake High School, scholarship winner.

Kalousek thanked the members for the scholarship and told of her future plans of attending Butte Junior College, majoring in horticulture.

Kitty Holberg, Mendo-Lake District director, presented Cali Schnabl with a $25 check and State Certificate for her Woodsy Owl/Smokey Bear first place poster. Leilani Carrell also won for her poster but was unable to attend the picnic.

Susan Buckles gave a special tribute to Marva Brandt for her longtime service to the club. She is moving to Southern California to be near her family.

During the social period music was provided by Doc Robels, members toured Debra's “kitchen” garden and took wagon rides pulled by Dana and Glen Benjamin's champion Percheron team around the farm.

The club meets the third Tuesday of the month from September to June.
