There are two activities the 89th annual Lake County Rodeo has for youngsters.
First is the Mutton Bustin’ competition, for ages 4 to 8. Ride a sheep and compete for a silver buckle; one buckle is awarded each night of the rodeo. Only 10 youngsters (boys and girls) can sign up per night.
Each contestant will be weighed on the night they sign up and they cannot weigh more than 50 pounds at that time. Apparel for riding is jeans, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy boots/shoes, no flip flops. The Rodeo Association supplies the necessary helmet for each rider.
The boy or girl who stays on the sheep the longest will win the silver buckle each night. Chairing the Mutton Bustin’ is Rodeo Director Angel Purdy-McGuire, 707-536-7257 or email
The second competition is the Cutest Cowpoke Contest for ages 3 to 8. The final date to enter is Friday, July 13, at 5:15 p.m. at the rodeo office on the Fairgrounds.
Youngsters are asked to wear their favorite western wear which can also include a lariat, cowboy/girl hat, etc.
One boy and one girl will be chosen by audience applause in front of the grandstands. There is no limit to the number of contestants for the Cutest Cowpoke.
A silver buckle will be awarded to one boy and one girl. Sponsoring the Cutest Cowpoke is the Clear Lake Junior Horsemen and the Scotts Valley 4-H Horse Group.
