Middletown Annual Chili and Salsa Cook-Off set for May 18; $1,000 grand prize offered

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The fifth annual Chili and Salsa Cook-Off will take place at Middletown Square Park on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This annual event draws in crowds from all around the county and surrounding areas. A delicious barbeque lunch can be purchased beginning at 11 a.m., serviced by the Middletown Senior Center.

Enjoy some beer and wine while grooving to live entertainment and shopping at a variety of artisan booths.

“This is our fifth year putting on this event, and it has grown every year. We enjoy seeing the community get together and enjoy food, drinks, shopping and live entertainment. It’s always a good time and the best part, besides the chili and salsa, proceeds will benefit the ‘Meals on Wheels’ program for local seniors in the Hidden Valley, Middletown and Cobb areas.” said Fletcher Thornton, founder of the Chili and Salsa Cook-Off.

The grand prize for the best chili is $1000 and free entry in next year’s competition. The second place winner will receive $200, third place $100 and $50 will go to the People’s Choice winner.

Cash prizes will also be awarded for the best salsa; First place is $500 and free entry in next year’s competition, second place $100, third place $50 and People’s Choice $25.

Public tasting will begin at noon, with live music from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

To enter the chili and/or salsa competition, complete an entry form online or in person at the Middletown Senior Center, located at 21256 Washington St.

A temporary food facility permit application must also be completed. The Health Department has agreed to waive the permit application fee.

The “Meals on Wheels” program delivers nutritious hot meals to home-bound elderly and disabled individuals who are unable to attend congregate meals due to illness, incapacitation or other factors.
