MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, Mendocino Unit, in cooperation with the city of Ukiah, will be burning on the west side of Ukiah on Tuesday, April 30, and throughout the next several weeks, as air quality and weather conditions allow.
Cal FIre will be burning piles of vegetative debris removed from the shaded fuel break as part of the Ukiah Fuels Reduction Project.
Burning will begin at approximately 10 a.m. and conclude at approximately 5 p.m. daily. Smoke will be visible throughout the Ukiah Valley and surrounding areas.
In its full scope the 26,541 acre Ukiah Fuels Reduction Project protects approximately 39,195
residences in the Ukiah area.
The project will include areas south of Lake Mendocino, the communities of El Dorado, Vichy Springs, Talmage, the western Ukiah hills, the Turtle Creek drainage, Ukiah Valley and the base of Cow Mountain.
The Ukiah Fuels Reduction Project is designed to increase public safety by thinning impacted
vegetation.
The thinning will assist in reducing the number of fire starts and decrease the size and intensity of fires.
Due to the recent history of large destructive fires in the region and the buildup of
vegetation, these projects are of the utmost importance.
