Caltrans works to keep motorists safe from rockfall incidents

In this Caltrans News Flash, see how Caltrans proactively works to keep California’s highways clear of rocks and debris and, in turn, ensures the safety of the traveling public.

It’s not uncommon to see some small rocks alongside the highway near a hill or mountainside, but when a rock slide or major rockfall incident occurs it may cause a major traffic disruption or unsafe traveling conditions for motorists.

Caltrans rock scaling, tree, and maintenance crews aim to mitigate these issues before they happen.

Teams scale down a slope removing loose rock with hand tools while maintenance uses traffic control to keep motorists a safe distance from the work zone.

These operations often involve the removal of vegetation, so tree crews join the effort to ensure the work will be done safely and efficiently.
