I attempted to attend the recent Lakeport City Council workshop at City Hall to present a letter from the Lake County Association of Realtors, and encountered a situation which I find quite troubling.
I called the Lakeport City Hall on Thursday, May 17, to be sure there was going to be a workshop the following Tuesday as I had not seen any announcement or reminder in Lake County News or the Record-Bee. No one at City Hall could confirm the workshop. On Friday, I received a call from City Hall confirming that there would be a workshop on the following Tuesday, May 22, beginning at 6 p.m.
Considering that public hearings/workshops become crowded early, I arrived at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday the 22nd. The doors were locked and there was no posting of the public workshop on either entrance to City Hall. I was puzzled, but came back to City Hall at 5:53 p.m. to again find the doors locked and no one waiting. At this point I figured that the workshop must have been canceled.
The next morning, Wednesday, May 23, I went to City Hall to drop off the letter I had planned to present at the workshop. I was told that there had been a workshop the evening before, and that no one from the public or the media had attended. I told the two people in the admin office that I had tried to attend; including the times I tried the doors and was told that they didn't open the doors until slightly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening. When I questioned that decision, I was told that the workshop was to begin at 6 p.m. and that's when they opened the doors.
Not drawing any conclusion, but by not posting a notice, or reminding the media of the workshop, it appears that the City Council almost guaranteed that no one would attend.

For the last couple of years I have been observing how Tower Mart constantly takes advantage of residents of the Oaks. Tower Mart has three stations in the area, one in Lower Lake, one in Lucerne and one in The Oaks. The Oaks store is always anywhere from five to 15 cents higher a gallon than the other two locations.
Why? Because there is no competition. All the stores are supplied by the same company and I think they are owned by the same person. The delivery costs to the locations have to be the same, but consistently the people in the Oaks are charged more.
On Saturday I went to Lucerne, the Oaks Tower Mart station was $3.25 a gallon and the Lucerne Tower Mart was $3.15 a gallon. Why? The other station in the Oaks, Beacon was $3.49, so no competition there.
I should add that the Beacon Station is always 15 to 20 cents a gallon higher than the Tower Mart, except on Wednesdays, when they have locals appreciation day, then the Beacon Station is at least five cents a gallon cheaper than Tower Mart, on that day only.
In Lucerne the Tower Mart has three other stations as competition, so they keep the price close to the other stations, the same in Lower Lake, but they can charge as they like in the Oaks.
I, for one, prefer to buy locally in the town in which I live. But I refuse to get taken advantage of. I will not buy gas from any Tower Mart, because even if I go to one of the other Tower Marts they are owned by the same person.
I would hope this letter, would make other people aware of how we are being taken advantage of, and you will make some kind of statement, so the owner of Tower Mart will stop biting the hand that could feed him.
Thanks for reading this.

Darwinist liberals are up to no good, again. Now, they want to ban spanking in the home. This is no joke. Sally Lieber (Democrat assemblywoman from Mountain View) says California families don’t know how to raise kids. She’ll show them. Her new law (introduced in the State Assembly) will outlaw, “spanking, hitting, and slapping a child under 4 years old.” Parents will go to jail if they don‘t obey. Spanking causes pain, she says, “it victimizes children and breeds violence in society.” She sounds sooooo righteous. Who’d want to hurt a 3-year-old?
Sally appears to be an angel of light but Bible readers know her campaign against spanking is diabolical. She’s like mother Eve who listened to a serpent and paid with her life. Secular Sally says don’t spank. Biblical wisdom says spank (Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him). No doubt, secular Sally scorns biblical writers. They’re mean and cruel, she’d say. Sally is mean and cruel. Children will pay a terrible price if she gets her way. Unfortunately, Sally is popular.
Where does Assemblywoman Sally get her crazy idea? No one knows for sure but the San Jose The Mercury News (Jan. 18, 2007) says she got it from her veterinarian. That’s right. She has a cat named Snoop and her vet said never hit the cat. “And if you never hit a cat,” Sally reasons, “you should never hit a kid.”
The Bible is honorable and Sally is harebrained foolish. The lack of discipline victimizes children and breeds violence in society; not spanking. Family and school chastisement train children up in the way they should go. Like Eve, Sally Lieber, the Democrat assemblywoman from Mountain View, is following the malevolent forces of darkness.

Why are criminals and failures getting Lake County’s most prestigious awards? Last October, Janine Smith-Citron (Lake Family Resource Center’s Programs Coordinator) generously honored sheriff's Deputy Derik Navarro with the esteemed “Law Enforcement Officer of Distinction” award. He demonstrated “professionalism and compassion” with victims of domestic violence, she gushed. Recently, he was arrested and charged with 18 felony counts related to sex acts with minors. Just how much research goes into these grand decorations, anyway?!
Melissa Fulton (Executive Director of the Lakeport Chamber of Commerce) recently flattered applause and compliments on Louise Nan, district superintendent of Konocti Unified School District. She’s “Woman of the Year,” burbled award judges praising her for, “years working in the Konocti Unified School District.” Her smiling face glowed under the STARS SHINE headlines on the front pages of the local newspapers. Unfortunately, her students at KUSD don’t shine when they take state tests. Louise, no doubt, is a friendly lady but she can’t teach kids to read, write and do arithmetic.
The same honor judges gave Bill Cornelison a “Lifetime Achievement” prize at the “Stars of Lake County” celebration. Bill was superintendent of Lake County Office of Education for many years. How do common, ordinary and unsuccessful, government employees get such high awards? They dress nice and smile a lot but, then, so does Barney.
It’s as plain as the nose on your face, Fulton and Smith-Citron need remedial classes in award giving. Sheriff's deputies charged with crimes should receive gleaming “Fleecing Taxpayer” medals instead of being “Officers of Distinction.” Superintendents of failing schools should be “Bogus Bumbling Professors” instead of “Women of the Year.” Newspaper editors who don’t pay attention to who‘s getting awards and for what, should get a great big “Empty Suit“ trophy. “The worse I get the more popular I am,“ is supposed to be droll humor.
