McCarty: Applauding efforts of the Jan. 6 Insurrection Committee

I applaud the efforts of the Jan. 6 Insurrection Committee and share the following quote in that regard:

“Since corrupt people unite among themselves to constitute a force, honest people must do the same.” — Leo Tolstoy, “War & Peace.”

Christwitz: Sharing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Veterans For Peace is advocating we publicize at least parts of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Here is article one: “Article 1 contains prohibitions against the development, testing, production, stockpiling, stationing, transfer, use and threat of use of nuclear weapons, as well as against assistance and encouragement to the prohibited activities.”

Finally, any direct or indirect "control over nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices" is forbidden.

Thank you for getting the word out.

Lee: Grateful for campaign experience

As a first-time candidate for elected office, I was filled with anticipation on election night. When the results started to come in and I was not among the apparent winners, it was comforting to be surrounded by great supportive people.

Not being one to linger in disappointment I am pleased to offer my congratulations to Patrick Sullivan for treasurer-tax collector, Charise Reynolds for Middletown School Board and Susan Krones for district attorney.

On Wednesday, I called Rich Ford to congratulate him as well. Although the final election results won’t be out until the Registrar of Voters Office completes the process and certifies the election, he is leading by a sizable margin for his reelection as assessor-recorder; it is highly unlikely the results will change much.

Making Lake County a place of prosperity through continuous self-examination, process improvement and accountability rests squarely on his shoulders. I wish him well.

As for me, I end my campaign for elected office as I began, with gratitude and appreciation to everyone who encouraged and believed in me — my campaign team, endorsers, everyone who donated time or money, those of you who cast a vote in my favor and my fiancé who supported me 100%. It was an experience of a lifetime.

It was never in my calculus to run for elected office. I ran because I was asked by business and community leaders and because I was convinced I could make a difference.

As I look back over the last few months, I believe that I did make a positive difference by calling attention to the importance of the assessor-recorder operations.

Friends are asking if it was worth the time and energy it took to run for assessor-recorder. My response? A resounding yes. I have learned so much, met so many people dedicated to the beautiful place we all call home, and established wonderful relationships I will cherish.

At the core of public service is an important premise I have always operated under: The people served are the boss — they essentially sign our paychecks. It behooves those of us who go into public service to listen to their feedback, address their interests and treat them with respect.

I did my best and I hope, in some small way, the path for better communication, improved services, transparency and especially for meaningful change in the Assessor-Recorder’s Office has been widened.

Carter: Farrington's inflated qualifications

We all know by now that Anthony Farrington mistakenly believes that he is qualified to be our elected district attorney. This, despite his own admission that he has never done one single jury trial.

After finally hearing Farrington admit to having no jury trial experience at the candidate's forum in Middletown, I thought someone should investigate the accuracy of his claim that he is qualified to be DA by virtue of his position as a hearing officer in Mendocino County.

An official for Mendocino County has looked into this and has advised that Farrington has conducted precisely ONE hearing as a hearing officer. Take a look at your ballot. Farrington lists himself as attorney/hearing officer. It strikes me as exaggeration at best and deception at worst.

I have been an attorney in Lake County for nearly 30 years. I have never seen a fellow attorney exaggerate such minimal credentials to such a tremendous extent. I am embarrassed for my profession that a fellow attorney would behave in such a manner.

Farrington recently put a quote in a letter to the voters of Lake County. He said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men and women to do nothing.” This quote is routinely and falsely attributed to Edmund Burke, but a little research will show that he never said it.

A better and more applicable quote is this one by Plato: "The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."

Thankfully, the good men and women of Lake County, with long and proven records of service and actual dedication and devotion to the protection of public safety, have come out in droves to endorse and support Susan Krones.

The Deputy Sheriff's Association, long-serving and devoted prosecutors like Rich Hinchcliff and Rachel Abelson, Judge Robert Crone, Judge Arthur Mann, our Congressman Mike Thompson, our Sen. Mike McGuire and many others have joined together to support the humble, honest and hard-working candidate who has spent decades working on behalf of the public.

Join them and vote for Susan Krones for DA.
