Households can bring up to 15 gallons of toxic items free of charge.
A charge will be made for amounts above 15 gallons. Items that are accepted include paint, solvents, fuels, five-gallon propane tanks, pool chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, dry cell batteries, fluorescent light tubes (up to 60 feet for free) and other toxins that cannot be put in the trash.
Excluded items that cannot be accepted are televisions, computer monitors, ammunition, explosives, radioactive materials or infectious wastes. Used oil can be recycled year round at a number of sites in the county.

The hazmobile program is subsidized by the Lake County Public Services Department Solid Waste Division.

Because Lake County Library shares in Sonoma County’s catalog and circulation system, patrons are contacting us to find out how this closure will affect service for library patrons in Lake County.
Sonoma County staff has assured Lake County Library staff that they will only turn off the Sonoma County portion of the system and that Lake County patrons should see little impact. Hold notifications and overdue notices will be sent as usual, but the pre-overdue emails will not be sent.
Patrons will still be able to search the catalog, place requests, and renew books, but books from Sonoma County will not be shipped during the furlough.
To access the catalog, go to the Lake County Library Web site http://library.co.lake.ca.us and click on “Library Catalog.” The Overdrive downloadable audiobook service will be turned off during the furlough.
Patrons who live in Lake County but use Sonoma County library cards will not be able to access Sonoma County’s online databases during the furlough.

All Lake County Library branches will be open on the usual schedule.
Lakeport Library, located at 1425 N. High St., is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m., telephone 707-263-8817.

Persons who contribute $10 or more to a local charity in Lake or Mendocino County between now and Christmas Eve will receive a free $10 gift card from Mendo Mill.
Mike Mayfield, the president of Mendo Mill, and Richard Cooper, the president of the Mendo Lake Credit Union, jointly announced the “Gift for Givers” campaign.
The two organizations teamed up last summer to raise $168,000 for local charities in a one-month Mendo Mill Charity Challenge.
“We learned from the Mendo Mill Charity Challenge that the spirit of giving runs broad and deep among the people of our local communities, and the holiday season is an appropriate time to ask for their help,” said Mayfield.
“This is a timely appeal to the generosity of the compassionate people in this area who recognize that many individuals as well as charitable organizations are struggling in the current slow economy,” Cooper added.
Mayfield said the free gift card process is simple and easy. “From now until Christmas Eve, just bring the receipt from your charitable contribution to any Mendo Mill store. Our cashiers will issue a free $10 gift card, no purchase necessary, limit one card per individual, and we will keep the name of the charity confidential.”
He added, “The $10 card may be used by the individual who has made the charitable contribution or may be donated to that person’s favorite charity.”
Cooper said that posters announcing the campaign will be displayed in the Credit Union’s offices in Ukiah, Fort Bragg and Lakeport, and cashiers will begin handing out reminders Nov. 16.
“We want to give this campaign maximum visibility from now until Christmas Eve” said Cooper, adding “All of our personnel are enthusiastically involved in the effort and will have complete information for our customers.”
