CLEARLAKE – Redbud Community Hospital has some advice to help people avoid health problems from the poor air quality caused by wildfires in Lake County.

Air pollution, including smoke from the outdoor fires, can irritate the lungs and throat, especially in individuals with asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (including chronic bronchitis and emphysema), and heart disease, said John Hodgkin, MD, a nationally known pulmonologist and medical director of Redbud Community Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and its hospitalist program.

“Approximately 20 percent of people in the United States have super-sensitive airways in their lungs and can also develop problems with their breathing during periods of excessive air pollution,” said Dr.

Hodgkin.

Symptoms of lung irritation from smoke in the air includes: cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest discomfort.

“You should contact your physician if you’re having increased problems with breathing, including worsening cough or shortness of breath. If you feel very short of breath, go to the emergency room for

evaluation to be safe,” said Dr. Hodgkin.

Dr. Hodgkin gives this advice for staying healthy until the air quality improves:

– Avoid going outdoors.

– Close the windows in your home or office.

– Avoid exercise or extra exertion outdoors.

– When indoors, use air conditioning in re-circulation mode or air filtering systems.

CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK – “The Majestic American White Pelican,” an intriguing bird of Clear Lake, will be featured in a slide presentation at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28 in the Clear Lake State Park Visitor Center auditorium.

Docent Leona Butts will provide some of the history of the pelican on Clear Lake. Have they always been here? Will they always return? What, no brood patch.

Also, take time to enjoy a stroll through the center’s natural history museum and inspect unique items in the gift shop.

The visitor center is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no entrance fee to the park for participating in walks, programs or visiting the museum.

Saturday programs are planned through July, with July 12 set aside for “Introduction to Volunteer/Docent Training,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Supervising Ranger Ryen Goering will introduce the program. Anyone interested in learning about the volunteer program in Lake County’s two states parks will be welcomed to the session. LAKE COUNTY – The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club is offering two scholarships, $1,000 each for college students who have completed at least one semester of college.

It is preferred that the students are majoring in some aspect in the field of agriculture. If students are majoring in another field they will also be considered.
